About this procedure

What Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) actually means

Scalp Micropigmentation is the leading non-surgical hair-loss treatment, used either as a standalone or to enhance a transplant result. Using specialist needles and biocompatible pigment matched to your natural hair colour, the practitioner deposits thousands of tiny dots into the upper dermis of the scalp. Each dot replicates the look of a hair follicle emerging from the skin. The result is a denser, defined "buzz-cut" appearance on a shaved head, or a fuller-looking head of hair when the pigment is placed between existing hairs in thinning areas. SMP is also the gold-standard for camouflaging strip-method scars and densifying thin hair without surgery. WMG London uses Trichotest pigment grade designed for long-term colour stability and includes touch-ups in the price.

The process

From consultation to final result

Step 01

Consultation and design

Practitioner assesses your skin tone, existing hairline shape and goal, then matches pigment to your natural hair colour.

Step 02

Session one

Foundation pigment is laid down across the treatment area, defining the hairline shape and primary density.

Step 03

Session two

Two to four weeks later, a second pass deepens density and refines the hairline. Most cases need two to three sessions total.

Step 04

Annual top-up

Pigment naturally softens over time. An optional touch-up at 18 to 24 months keeps the result sharp.

Recovery

What the months ahead look like

Day 1

Treated area appears slightly red and the pigment looks darker than the final result. Walk out and back to normal day-to-day.

Days 3 to 7

Pigment softens to its long-term tone. Avoid heavy sweating, swimming and direct sun.

Week 2

Final tone visible. Schedule session two if recommended.

Month 12 to 18

Optional touch-up to maintain sharpness.

Frequently asked

Common questions

Will SMP look fake?

When the practitioner matches pigment shade to your natural hair colour and uses the correct needle depth for your skin type, SMP looks like a clean shaved buzz cut at conversational distance. WMG London uses Trichotest pigments developed specifically to fade naturally rather than turning blue or green over time.

How long does SMP last?

The deposited pigment is permanent in the dermis but softens over years as the body slowly breaks down the carrier. Most patients schedule an optional touch-up every 18 to 24 months to keep the result sharp.

Is SMP painful?

Most patients describe it as similar to a small tattoo: tolerable, with the most sensitive area being right along the hairline. Topical anaesthetic can be applied if you prefer.

Can SMP cover a transplant scar?

Yes. SMP is one of the most effective ways to camouflage an older FUT linear scar or visible FUE dot-scars, blending the scar tissue with the surrounding hair density.

What does SMP cost at WMG London?

SMP at WMG London starts from £1,200 and is priced by treatment area and number of sessions required. Quote is fixed at consultation.
